Growing up urban can provide our kids with great access to modern amenities and resources. But in our evolving world, living in a city requires us to teach street smarts with a more comprehensive approach than our parents may have. Beyond “look both ways” or “don’t talk to strangers,” here are some ways to equip your children with the basics they need to thrive and stay safe growing up in the city.

Navigation and Awareness

Most kids living in an urban environment need to develop good spatial awareness and navigation from a young age. Although we’re living in the era of smartphones with multiple GPS apps, it’s important that our kids know the basics of reading maps, getting around their neighborhood, navigating to safe locations (the library, police station, or community center), and how to confidently use public transit.

While they’re younger, it’s the best idea to always keep them within arm’s reach, especially when you’re near traffic or in a crowded area. Make a habit of holding hands when crossing the street or walking near traffic. Teaching street smarts can start early–even toddlers can understand that they need to stop at the edge of the curb and hold hands with mom or dad. And there’s no shame in using a safety harness if you have a kiddo who likes to run.

Some core lessons to teach young:

  • Traffic patterns and rules to follow as a pedestrian
  • Safe and unsafe areas for kids in their neighborhood
  • How to handle encounters with strangers
  • How to contact their grown-up or a safe person in the case of an emergency
  • How to stay visible if they’re walking at dusk or in the dark
  • What to do if they get separated from you

Digital Street Smarts

Obviously, the lines between the online world and our physical world can easily end up blurred for today’s kids. Helping them understand how their digital actions can impact their life in the real world is imperative. Have frank and honest conversations with your child about how just like we’re careful in real life, we have to be safe with our actions online too. A few digital safety rules to include in your conversations:

  • Don’t share your address, phone number, or your school name anywhere online
  • Always talk to your grown-up before chatting with new people on the internet
  • Don’t add or share your location on apps or games
  • If something online makes you feel uncomfortable, talk to mom or dad right away

Building Strong Urban Community

Safety education isn’t only about our individual awareness of the world around us, it’s also vital to build local community connections for our families. Help your children meet and know their neighbors, connect to local community and school networks, and make sure they feel comfortable with seeking help from safe people if they need to.

As always, teaching our kids how to stay safe in their environment is a continuous conversation that will evolve as they grow. And while we want them to be careful, we don’t want them to be fearful. As you teach them these core life skills, you’re helping them develop into capable, confident, and safe young humans.
