Friendship in early childhood can add significant value to our children’s lives and encourage their long-term emotional growth and development. With the growth of the digital era, when screens and virtual connections are increasingly common for many kids, it has become increasingly essential to build strong early real-world friendships. Let’s take a look at some practical ways you can advocate for your child’s social development and nurture real relationships.

Create Plenty of Opportunities for In-Person Interactions With Their Peers

Kids need intentional opportunities to interact with other children their own age to develop strong social skills. Schedule and facilitate playdates, group activities, or enrolling your child in local extracurriculars that they may enjoy. Whether it’s a local sports teams, art classes, or neighborhood playgroup, face-to-face interactions with their peers are natural environments for childhood friendships to begin.

Model Healthy Social Skills

Small children learn by observing and copying our actions. When they observe us being kind, sharing, and resolving conflicts peacefully, they’re more likely to pick up and imitate our behaviors. Slow down and take the time to role-play social situations with them. Try playing how to introduce themself to a new friend and handle disagreements with phrases they can use.

Make Space To Nurture Existing Friendships

Once your child makes a friend at daycare or school, help them build and nurture that connection. Make the time to schedule regular playdates, help them make a card for their friend’s birthday, and facilitate keeping in touch with a friend who moved away. These pivotal early childhood experiences teach our children the value and joy of maintaining long term friendships.

Encourage Their Interests

Early childhood friendships are often the strongest around mutual interests. If they love dinosaurs, dancing, or building robots, encourage their unique pursuits and passions and help them connect with other kiddos who enjoy the same. Common ground offers a natural foundation for conversation and deeper relationships.

Navigate Social Bumps Together

Every child is likely to face a social difficulties at some point, from feeling left out or running into a conflict. Rather than rushing in as a parent to intervene and solve their problem for them, listen to their concerns, validate their feelings, and guide them in finding a solution. Helping them problem solve can increase their resilience and build confidence!

Balance Structured and Free Play

While being a super-mom and organizing an exciting activity can build core memories, facilitating unstructured play times are vitally important for developing early social skills. Through free play, our children learn to negotiate, compromise, and use their imaginations together. Maintain opportunities for both in your child’s life.

Always Remember: Every Child is Different

Some of our kiddos are naturally social little butterflies, while others take a bit more time to warm up in a social situation. Make space for your child’s unique personality, social style, and needs. There’s no “perfect” number of friends, just make sure your child feels secure and supported in the friendships they choose.

Your supportive presence is making a difference. As you create opportunities for social growth, teach conflict resolution, and offer gentle guidance along the way, you’re helping your child develop a sold foundation for friendships that can make their life richer for years to come!
